Blogging and Body Image

Dove Real Beauty Campaign

1. Since you started blogging has your image of yourself changed?
Yes, I realized that the image you see in the mirror is not the same as the image you see through the camera lens. This lead to the conclusion that the image you have of yourself is not the same as the image others have of you. I was probably a lot harder on myself and saw only the flaws. Now I try to imagine what others see and focus on the positive.

2. Are you self-conscious about any aspect of yourself? If so, do you
go out of your way to avoid it or do you post it/talk about it anyway?
I know this will not be the normal self-conscious answer. I totally notice how much my teeth have shifted since having my braces off forever and a day ago. I try not to let it bother me and just smile as usual.
As far as body image, I realize I am not as young as most bloggers out there and it can be hard not to compare myself.  It has made me realize I need to be thankful for how I look and to take care of myself.

3. Based on how you are feeling now, what do you think the future
holds in the evolution of your body image?
I think I will only come to appreciate myself more and when I do see something I don't like, I will try to change it if I can...
That is sans surgery!
EXAMPLE: I had to stop doing yoga for 5 months due to an injury and it took a toll on my body, not as long and lean as I was. I am working on getting that look back now.

4. Do you photograph yourself for your blog? If so, how do you feel
about the experience when you're having your picture taken? If you
choose not to post pictures of yourself, what prompted that decision?
I do take the photos of myself using a tripod. At first is was weird and awkward. I am much more comfortable doing it now.  I think when using a tripod we don't act as natural in front of the camera.   I have a couple of go to poses that I know almost always work. New respect for models~!!

5. What would you want every person who struggles with body image to
take to heart?
Realize that we all are made differently and that the media's image of what is beautiful is not real or attainable. No one has your eyes, your nose, your hair, your hands, your voice or your smile. You are what makes you special and beautiful and don't let anyone make you think differently about yourself!
You do need to take care of yourself, but don't let it become an obsession or let it steal your self-worth!

1 Peter 3:3-4
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

I think I've become more comfortable in my own skin since becoming a mama and even more now that I'm putting photos of myself out there into the blogosphere...Oh, and I really need to get a tripod!

I love yoga because it makes me feel a lot more comfortable with my own body. Not because of size, but because it makes me feel strong.

Brett--I love that you have included the scripture. I have found myself thinking of this very verse off and on over the course of the past 6 months.
