Friend Friday Questions: Comparing Your Blog To Other Blogs

1. Have you ever looked at someone's blog and thought yours will never measure up?
I think we all have felt that at some point. Whether you are a newbie, been around a while or even a well known blogger. I learned a long time ago that there will ALWAYS be someone better, shinier, more interesting, younger etc. Comparing does nothing for you and you can rarely get on with what you are doing by comparing. Instead figure out what you can do that you are good at and go for it. Let the bigger, better blog encourage you to tap into yourself, but don't compare yourself.

2. Do you (did you) feel pressure to meet some kind of undefined standard for fashion bloggers?
As I have said before, when I started this, I had no idea of the fashion blogging world that was out there, so there were no expectations. As I came to realize what a big world this really was, I also came to the conclusion that everyone had to start somewhere, right? I have definitely become better at things by observing other bloggers and have aspirations to grow and become better, but I try not to put any pressure on myself. As long as we are doing something we love, it will always be better than trying to do something we think we should be doing.

3. Many established fashion bloggers are also extraordinary DIYers, bakers, and crafty people. Do you think you need to combine all of these things to be successful at blogging?
I think those bloggers that can do it all are great. I don't necessarily think you need to do it all to be successful. Sometimes less more more. Try and find what works for you and stick with it. For example: If you are not a crafty person, don't force yourself to come up with a DIY. It probably won't be that great and you might hurt your blog in the end. I like to cook, but am no baker. I would never try to do a tutorial on baking.

4. The most successful blogs are the ones that have their own personal voice - how are you developing your voice or how did you find yours?
I would say I am still developing my voice. I take cues from my readers on posts that work and posts that don't. I am learning what type of writing comes easy for me instead of trying to force something. I am hoping that it will all click very soon and I will have that AH HA moment of, By George I Think I've Got It.

5. Toot your own horn... what's one thing you do that is unique to you and your blog? What gives your blog an edge?
Well, by default I am an older blogger, blogging about fashion for women over 45. I think that I do a fairly good job of showing older women that you don't have to dress conservative, boring or stuffy. My goal is make women my age go into their closet and think about what they are going to put on instead of just reaching for the cropped pants and boring plain t-shirt. Sometimes as older women we have put so many others ahead of ourselves, that by the time the nest is empty we have given up trying to look our best! I want be a voice letting these women know that it's not to late to rock their style.

Thanks to ModlyChic for always coming up with great questions!

Applause on that last answer--this does explains what can happen to empty nest mothers. You may want to do a post on your monogramming work from time to time, to let your readers know that you do have creative SKILLS.

Ditto to what Terri said but also I could relate to #4. I am still trying to find my voice--not quite there yet but still plugging away and waiting for the AHA! Paula

I always appreciate bloggers who have something different than everyone else. Your age lets you bring something new to the table and inspire a whole group of women!
